The Hierophant as Intentions — Tarot Meaning

Major Arcana · The Hierophant · Keywords: Tradition, Conformity, Morality, Ethics

undefined

A robed figure in a triple crown sits between two stone pillars, one hand raised in blessing, two tonsured acolytes kneeling below him and a pair of crossed keys at his feet. That is The Hierophant in the abstract. As intentions, it becomes concrete: the wisdom of the tried path pointed directly at what someone means to do.

What The Hierophant means as intentions

A robed figure in a triple crown sits between two stone pillars, one hand raised in blessing, two tonsured acolytes kneeling below him and a pair of crossed keys at his feet. In the intentions position, that general truth takes a specific shape. The Hierophant is an Earth card, and Earth moves the way it moves: the answer to what someone means to do will have that element's character — its speed, its temperature, its way of arriving.

One more consideration: as intentions, The Hierophant often describes something the questioner already senses. the wisdom of the tried path is rarely news; it is confirmation. If this page feels like it is telling you what you knew, that is the card doing its job — the value is in the naming, which is what makes action possible.

The Hierophant reversed as intentions

A reversed The Hierophant in the intentions position usually points at interference rather than absence. Tradition is still the subject, but tradition, conformity, morality, ethics are showing up distorted — exaggerated, suppressed, or performed for an audience. The useful question is what the upright version would look like, and what specifically is bending it out of shape.
