The Lovers as Intentions — Tarot Meaning

Major Arcana · The Lovers · Keywords: Love, Relationships, Choices, Harmony

undefined

There is a reason readers ask what The Lovers means as intentions more than almost any other framing: the direction of the will is where readings get personal. The choice the heart already made — that is what this card brings to the position.

What The Lovers means as intentions

Think of the direction of the will as the frame and The Lovers as the picture. The frame asks about what someone means to do; the picture shows the choice the heart already made — Love, harmony, relationships, and values alignment. Put them together and the upright meaning is: what someone means to do is currently characterised by love, relationships, choices, harmony, and the card endorses that state rather than warning against it.

Numerologically and elementally, The Lovers speaks of union with Air's signature. In practical terms: expect the answer to behave the way Air behaves — and plan accordingly. Tarot's elements are not decoration; they are instructions about pace and texture.

The Lovers reversed as intentions

Reversed, The Lovers as intentions turns the reading inward. The the choice the heart already made does not disappear — love, relationships, choices, harmony inverted become delayed, private, or blocked. Where the upright card answers what someone means to do openly, the reversal suggests the answer is unfinished: felt but unspoken, intended but unacted, approaching but not arrived. Read it as a draft rather than a denial.
