If The Hermit has come up as feelings in your spread, the cards are answering what someone feels with the lantern carried inward. This page unpacks that answer — upright, reversed, and in plain language.

What The Hermit means as feelings

Read as feelings, The Hermit is at its most literal. Forget cleverness: the lantern carried inward applied to what someone feels means what it says. The keywords introspection, solitude, guidance, reflection are not metaphors here — they are the report. When this card is upright in this position, trust the surface reading first; depth is for the surrounding cards.

It helps to remember what this card is not. The Hermit is not a verdict about worth; it is a description of solitude in motion. The lantern carried inward — held lightly, that theme informs without imprisoning. The cards describe weather; you still choose the clothing.

The Hermit reversed as feelings

Do not read the reversal as the opposite of the upright meaning; read it as the same meaning under pressure. The Hermit reversed as feelings keeps the lantern carried inward on the table but moves it somewhere harder to work with — underground, where what someone feels gets answered by avoidance instead of honesty. Naming the avoidance is usually the whole work.

Reflection prompts

What am I feeling that I have not said aloud, even to myself?
Whose feelings am I actually asking about — mine or theirs?
What would change if I treated this feeling as information, not instruction?
