Is The Devil a good card to get as action?

Upright, yes — The Devil as action is read as an honest, workable signal about the concrete next move. The chains you could slip in this position rewards directness: name what the card describes and it becomes something you can work with. Reversed, treat it as a draft rather than a verdict and give the situation a fortnight before re-reading.

The Devil as Action — Tarot Meaning

Major Arcana · The Devil · Keywords: Shadow, Attachment, Restriction, Materialism

undefined

If The Devil has come up as action in your spread, the cards are answering the concrete next move with the chains you could slip. This page unpacks that answer — upright, reversed, and in plain language.

What The Devil means as action

Read as action, The Devil is at its most literal. Forget cleverness: the chains you could slip applied to the concrete next move means what it says. The keywords shadow, attachment, restriction, materialism are not metaphors here — they are the report. When this card is upright in this position, trust the surface reading first; depth is for the surrounding cards.

There is a second layer worth noting. The Devil carries Capricorn and Earth correspondences, and the chains you could slip under those influences suggests the situation has momentum, not just meaning. Cards do not only describe states; they describe directions. The direction here is the one attachment takes when it is honoured rather than resisted.

The Devil reversed as action

Do not read the reversal as the opposite of the upright meaning; read it as the same meaning under pressure. The Devil reversed as action keeps the chains you could slip on the table but moves it somewhere harder to work with — underground, where the concrete next move gets answered by avoidance instead of honesty. Naming the avoidance is usually the whole work.
