King of Pentacles as Intentions — Tarot Meaning

Minor Arcana · King of Pentacles · Keywords: Prosperity, Security, Discipline, Mastery

undefined

King of Pentacles as intentions is one of the more searched meanings in tarot, because the intentions position describes what someone means to do — the direction of their will, acted on or not. Here is how this card — the steady command of matter — reads when it lands there.

What King of Pentacles means as intentions

Read as intentions, King of Pentacles is at its most literal. Forget cleverness: the steady command of matter applied to what someone means to do means what it says. The keywords prosperity, security, discipline, mastery are not metaphors here — they are the report. When this card is upright in this position, trust the surface reading first; depth is for the surrounding cards.

There is a second layer worth noting. King of Pentacles carries Venus and Earth correspondences, and the steady command of matter under those influences suggests the situation has momentum, not just meaning. Cards do not only describe states; they describe directions. The direction here is the one matter takes when it is honoured rather than resisted.

King of Pentacles reversed as intentions

Do not read the reversal as the opposite of the upright meaning; read it as the same meaning under pressure. King of Pentacles reversed as intentions keeps the steady command of matter on the table but moves it somewhere harder to work with — underground, where what someone means to do gets answered by avoidance instead of honesty. Naming the avoidance is usually the whole work.

Reflection prompts

What does this person actually want — not what they say they want?
What would their actions look like if these intentions were honest?
Am I asking about their intentions to avoid examining my own?
