King of Wands as Intentions — Tarot Meaning

Minor Arcana · King of Wands · Keywords: Vision, Leadership, Honor, Mastery

undefined

There is a reason readers ask what King of Wands means as intentions more than almost any other framing: the direction of the will is where readings get personal. The steady command of drive — that is what this card brings to the position.

What King of Wands means as intentions

Read as intentions, King of Wands is at its most literal. Forget cleverness: the steady command of drive applied to what someone means to do means what it says. The keywords vision, leadership, honor, mastery are not metaphors here — they are the report. When this card is upright in this position, trust the surface reading first; depth is for the surrounding cards.

There is a second layer worth noting. King of Wands carries Mars and Fire correspondences, and the steady command of drive under those influences suggests the situation has momentum, not just meaning. Cards do not only describe states; they describe directions. The direction here is the one drive takes when it is honoured rather than resisted.

King of Wands reversed as intentions

Do not read the reversal as the opposite of the upright meaning; read it as the same meaning under pressure. King of Wands reversed as intentions keeps the steady command of drive on the table but moves it somewhere harder to work with — underground, where what someone means to do gets answered by avoidance instead of honesty. Naming the avoidance is usually the whole work.

Reflection prompts

What does this person actually want — not what they say they want?
What would their actions look like if these intentions were honest?
Am I asking about their intentions to avoid examining my own?
